Laura started her blog in 2016 as a way of carving out a career as a writer, searching out inspirational stories from islanders and exploring how big dreams and ambitions could be contained on an island only 9 miles by 5. Her work has lead her to write for magazines such as Gallery, Connect and the Parish Magazines as well as collaborations with de Gruchy. Along with blogging Laura teaches social media classes and offers herself as a freelance writer and content creator

Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

I was looking to change careers after 14 years in the finance industry, to embrace my more creative side, my flair for writing and my love of fashion. My blog became a constantly evolving cv and eventually led me to start a career in PR where I get to write everyday.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

I lead a very full, busy life balancing my job, freelance jobs and blogging. I have the luxury of being able to pick what i blog about ensuring the stories are of high quality and relevant to my lifestyle themes. I am often out shooting fashion images on my phone and capturing the style of Jersey’s inhabitants, as well as planning out blog posts. I have a tendency to take on too much, as I’m so worried a good story may pass me by!

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

It is and continues to be the positive feedback I get from my audience on my blog. As someone who had changed career late in life, it’s encourging that people are really enjoying my blogs and feeling inspired by then to make large changes in their lives.

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

To quote a well known sports brand ‘Just do it!’ It does to need to be perfect or right, the important thing is to make a start and learn from your mistakes. Speak to as many people as you can and show a willingness to learn.
