“Keep at it. There are so many hurdles to jump over and sometimes you feel like giving up but it's worth it in the end."

Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

To be honest, I didn't know I would end up singing opera. I have always loved to sing and dance, I started at age the age of 7 and it carried on from there. I always thought I would sing pop or musical theatre and maybe jazz. However, after attending Chetham's School of Music, participating in masterclass's and operettas, I realised there is so much to opera I didn't know about and became hooked.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

A typical day for me is mainly full of practice and lessons. I aim to practice around 2-3 hours a day, physically, but the rest of the learning eg. learning languages and words to songs, research and writing translations, can be done at home or at the library. At the minute, my days are also filled with rehearsals for upcoming events at college. It is pretty full on but I'm very excited to see what happens next!

What are the best parts about your business?

The best part about what I do is the unlimited creativity I can apply to my work. Each song or aria can be interpreted in many different ways, it depends on how you interpret the scene and also how you perceive the character through the word underlay. Another great attribute to singing, is seeing the joy it brings to others. I have participated in outreach projects in schools, community projects and elderly concerts. Each time we sing to them, they are always so grateful and I think I take it for granted a little that I get to do what I love everyday!

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

The greatest struggles have been A) having the courage to promote myself as my own business. I get self conscious when trying to promote myself on social media which I think is normal, but learning to promote myself in a better way will help me do more concerts and make important contacts - so I need to get better at it! And B) saying NO to 'free' gigs. I always sing at any opportunity I get but the issue is, I now depend on it financially so need to only accept paid gigs (most of the time anyway!).

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

Every time I receive positive feedback, it makes me believe in myself a bit more and gives me confidence to do what I love!

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

Keep at it. There are so many hurdles to jump over and sometimes you feel like giving up but it's worth it in the end. That's what I have found anyway. I am nowhere near my end goal and even though it hasn't been the easiest journey, I have learnt so much and when the hard work is paid off it's so worth the trouble.

What currently inspires you?

My family, each and everyday. Singing wise, Sarah Connolly is my biggest inspiration. If you haven't heard her sing, you're missing out, she is amazing! In general, I am inspired daily by my teachers, coaches and colleagues, there is never a dull day at Trinity Laban and I always feel so supported and encouraged by everyone when I sing.
