Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

My journey into Graphic Design started originally through studying design at school and college. I worked in finance for a number of years before deciding to go to university and study, I knew I wanted to work towards a career I was driven and passionate about. Although this wasn’t the conventional route, it was definitely worth the wait, plus having worked in a sector I found less interesting makes me appreciate how creative I can be in my work, giving me a focus and determination in my practice. It also led me to make the jump into the career I always wanted - so really it was the most positive outcome, which I always try and take from any situation.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

As a freelancer a typical day involves making a plan of things I want to achieve before the day is out. If I’m starting a new project I always dedicate time to researching and looking for inspiration. I’ve found that I can get a spark of inspiration from a multitude of places, whether it be something I’ve listened to, something I noticed whilst out and about, or in experimentation - that’s what makes my job so fun and interesting, not knowing where an idea will lead to.

What are the best parts about your business?

For me there’s no better feeling than seeing something that started out as a sketch or an idea be transformed into something tangible that you can touch, experience or see on a wall. It still gives me a great sense of pride seeing my work in the public eye.

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

I think as a freelancer it’s keeping yourself disciplined and motivated. There’s always going to be times where you’re up against a deadline or you feel you’re hitting a brick wall creatively. But, sometimes it just takes stepping away from something, to allow you to see it from a different angle, so I try not to get too bogged down with one piece of work.

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

I still remember turning the thought into an idea and action that I was about to change career path entirely and become a Graphic Designer. I didn’t really know at the time how I would get there or how long it would take, but I knew I’d make it happen. To which there’s been inevitable ups and downs, like anything you’re determined to pursue but it’s all been worth it to get to this point and I wouldn’t change it!

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

Without doubt I would say maintain your focus and drive. If it’s something you want deep down then you can make it happen, it’s just a question of how much you’re willing to give.

What currently inspires you?

I like to think I draw inspiration from a number of places, whether it be new or old music, the recommendation of a book, travelling to a new country or pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. All of these things can challenge and provoke you in different ways, often I find inspiration just when I least expect it.
