Stephanie is a visual artist who explores her relationship with the landscape through painting and drawing. Stephanie will often visit her favourite spots on the Island to gain inspiration and then uses her art practice to encapsulate these brief moments in time through the intricate details in her work.

Since graduating from Kent University in 2014 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Stephanie has developed her art practice alongside working as an Art and Design Teacher, these two strands came together in the completion of her MA in Artist Teacher and Contemporary Practices at Goldsmiths in 2019. Stephanie continues to engage and share her creative practice and is always seeking opportunities to work alongside others in the community.

Stephanie’s artwork is often made into prints and greeting cards. Stephanie is in the process of creating her online shop, so keep an eye out.

Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

I had been working as an Art teacher in the UK for the past five years whilst completing an MA at Goldsmiths. Continuing to engage with the creative process has very much driven my teaching practice and since completing the MA I have found myself making non-stop. Having made the decision to return to Jersey, I wanted to embrace this opportunity to establish my art practice on the Island through exhibiting and selling my work.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

I continue to balance my teaching and artistic practices and enjoy the flexibility of this, no day is the same. In the studio, I try to take regular breaks from my work or work on several pieces at a time; this gives the distance I need from my work to keep reviewing it and coming back to it. I gain inspiration from walking and being outdoors, visiting the places I love, I try to walk every day and take the camera with me.

What are the best parts about your business?

I think the most rewarding thing is to be able to do what I love to do every day and to be able to share that with people. It is always lovely to hear what interest people and their thoughts on my work.

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

I am still in the early stages of establishing my business but I think one of the challenges I have found so far is balancing that instinct to create with producing work to sell. I have learned that it is important to stay true to yourself and your style

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

It has always been a dream for me to exhibit and sell my work and I think my biggest moment has been the overwhelming support I have received from my friends and family who have given me the push I needed to make a go of it.

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

My advice would be to speak to others and find out how they do things. I have been humbled by how supportive and helpful people are, we are so lucky to live on an Island where there is that sense of community.

What currently inspires you?

I love being outdoors and it really does influence my creative practice. My work really focuses on observing those intricate details of a forever changing landscape. My work always starts with going on walks and being out in nature and then I return to the studio and start playing with materials.
