Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

After nearly 10 years of working for two local broadcast companies in Jersey, I wanted to take my career into my own hands. I've always enjoyed working with other creatives to develop ideas and further my animations, working as a freelancer would allow me to work with a wider range of creatives without too much restriction.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

Normally the alarm goes off at 4:44 so I can head outside, exercise and make the most of the day before focusing on work. Once I'm behind my desk the radio or Spotify goes on and a mix of emails, scripting, storyboarding, animation and (sadly sometimes) admin commences.

What are the best parts about your business?

I love my job, creating animations and film/videos is something I've always wanted to do. Working for myself also allows me to have the freedom to pursue my outdoor hobbies too.

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

Admin, admin admin. Spreadsheets and the behind the scenes of the business isn't my strongest point as I prefer the creative aspects to my job. Organising time off isn't a speciality I'm good at either, as I said before I love my job and I find it hard to not be thinking about current/future projects when I allow myself away from the office.

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

When I learnt how to properly take on constructive criticism, it's helped me to development my skills instead of stagnating.

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

You're not alone! Even though it may feel like it some times, especially when you are burning the late night/early morning oil for the third or fourth day in a row, there is always someone out there you can chat to about your work. Also break it down into chunks, a project can seem like a giant beast, but when you start to focus on smaller areas rather than the whole you don't feel so helpless against the task ahead.

What currently inspires you?

My instagram feed is full of beautiful colours, designs and animations, as well as chatting to fellow motion, design, digital, photography and film creatives. Also going for a long bike, run or swim helps inspire the creative juices to flow.
