Jared Crespel is a new singer/songwriter from Jersey in the Channel Islands. He has been a member of various bands/projects since his early teens, and has recently started releasing music under his own name.

After living in London for 4 years, he returned to Jersey in the summer of 2018 and started work on writing original music. On 1st January 2019, he launched his social media accounts and announced he will be releasing a song a month for the entirety of the year. The songs will be released on the last day of each month, commencing 31st January.

“I set myself deadlines for 2019 to force myself to release the content. Best decision I ever made. "

Tell us about your path to setting up your business and what motivated you?

After having worked on various other projects with other artists, I felt it was time to put my own stamp on something. I decided that from that point onward (Summer 2018) that I would use my name and produce music that I was proud of, and didn't just meet criteria that was set out. That being said, as important as my solo work is to me, I consider collaboration invaluable. I've been lucky enough to meet a whole range of seriously talented people and maintain contact with them, so I'm looking forward to more of that in the future too.

How do you work and what is a typical day like for you?

I like to compose and write on my own initially, that's just how the ideas come. If there's someone watching I feel a pressure to try and get it right first time, which almost never happens. Once I've spent some time making mistakes and working out if the idea is going somewhere, I will record it in some form. If I'm at home this will be in the studio as a demo but I have been known to record myself singing into my phone whilst getting on a bus. After the bulk of the idea is there, I'll take it to friends to share. I think it’s important to show the work to lay-people as much as other musicians (they're your target audience after all). This all tends to occur late in the day, I'm a night owl so a lot of writing takes place in the early hours of the morning.

What are the best parts about your business?

For me, it always feels the best when you release the work into the wild. There's a sense of relief and excitement that something you've created and nurtured is out of your hands finally.

I love performing live also, however producing records hasn't left a lot of time for that. I'm hoping to get back to a regular performing schedule in 2020.

What has been your greatest struggle as a business owner so far?

Believing that the audience is there. I sat on songs and ideas for the best part of 9 months because I didn't believe that people would pay attention. I set myself deadlines for 2019 to force myself to release the content. Best decision I ever made.

What has been your biggest a-ha moment so far?

January 31st, when my first single released. People payed attention, shared it and most importantly; gave me constructive feedback. Never be satisfied with your work, even if its your best. Constantly self assess and listen to people.

Do you have any advice for other small business owners?

Just keep working. If you believe in the product and put in what you want to get out, it will work.

What currently inspires you?

I love exploring new technology and techniques in music, learning about synthesizers and new VSTs - together with new instruments. I'm lucky in that I know a lot of people who play a range of instruments, but I'm always up for a challenge. I find the writing style changes with each instrument too, hit it and see what happens.

Anything else you would like to share?

Get in touch! I'd love to work with anyone who is interested in writing/recording music on the island. Nothing excites me more than new music, especially if its coming from the island.
